Dear Bath Families,

It has been a hard week but we have been strengthened by each other's support and from our community.

As our school community processes a recent event, it is normal for students and adults to experience a range of emotions and to have questions about what they may be hearing. Students may react in different ways depending on their age, experiences, and how connected they feel to the situation. These responses are common. With time, reassurance, and support from caring adults, these reactions often ease.

Children may have questions or may hear different versions of what happened from peers or online. Keeping lines of communication open and inviting your child to share their thoughts or questions can help them feel supported. The following strategies may be helpful in talking with your child :

  • Plan conversations rather than reacting in the moment
  • Use supportive language and listen to your child
  • Validate feelings and offer reassurance
  • Encourage questions and clarify rumors or misinformation
  • Explore cultural and community perspectives
  • Reinforce school supports and familiar routines
  • Inspire hope and stay present, even without all the answers
  • Monitor safety and respond if needed

If you are worried about your child’s safety or the safety of others around them, seek immediate assistance. You can call an ambulance, contact the local mobile crisis service (613-354-7388), call 9-1-1, or go to the emergency room of your local hospital.

Signs that may signal a mental health concern in your child:

  • Frequent changes in mood or emotions
  • Persistent sadness or loss of interest in usual activities
  • Increased need for reassurance or contact
  • Irritability or low frustration tolerance
  • Changes in energy, sleep, or appetite
  • Declining motivation, effort, or academic performance

Difficult events can affect adults as well as children. Paying attention to your own well-being—by taking breaks, connecting with trusted supports, and allowing yourself time to process—can help you feel more steady and better able to support your child.

Human Development and Sexual Health

As part of LDSB's commitment to ongoing transparency and communication with families, please follow the link to Form 325-D on the LDSB website. It outlines the Human Development and Sexual Health curriculum expectations for Grades 1-8.  Families can request to have their child or children exempted from instruction related to Human Development and Sexual Health expectations by completing and returning an exemption form for each child (Form 325-B) five school days before the start of instruction. Prior to instruction, your child's classroom teacher will inform parents/guardians when the expectations related to the Human Development and Sexual Health expectations in Strand D will be covered. For a more detailed overview of this process, please refer to Administrative Procedure 325: Exemption From Human Development and Sexual Health Instruction (listed under the Policies and Procedures section of the LDSB website), or contact the school.

insurance

Student Accident Insurance

The Limestone District School Board requires that students have student accident insurance in order to participate in extra-curricular activities. Before students will be allowed to participate in these events, parents/guardians must confirm their own coverage for items not covered under the Provincial Health Plan, or purchase an insurance plan.

Each year a Student Accident Insurance Plan is made available to all students on a voluntary basis. The plan provides protection for dental damage due to accidents, fracture benefits and other important coverage, which are not covered under the Provincial Health Plan. Some parents may have dental plan coverage through their workplace but many of these plans are limited in one way or another, while this accident coverage is not. You should compare plans to make sure you have the coverage you need or desire.

In making this plan available, the Board wishes to make its position clear in the matter of insurance. Under the Education Act, the Board is not permitted to provide insurance coverage for accidents to pupils, therefore, the Board recommends consideration of this plan to any parent who wishes to obtain this kind of insurance. Although the policy has all the advantages of a group plan, it is essentially a direct contract between the parent and the insurance company.

A family plan is also available for three or more students which permits the enrolment of students in the family who are attending schools outside the jurisdiction of this Board as long as at least one child in the family is attending a school within the Limestone District School Board.

If you wish to subscribe to this insurance, you may do so by completing the form handed out to students the first week of school and mailing it directly to Reliable Life Insurance Company in the stamped envelope provided. Or, for your convenience, you may purchase directly online at www.insuremykids.com.

Bath School Advisory Council

Our fabulous parent council is looking for new members! If you would like to be a part of this great team, please come to our next meeting date is March 25th at 6:30. We are looking forward to meeting in the library. Please let us know if you can make it and if you will require childcare. We are pleased to be able to provide it during the meeting for those who require it.

School Trips and Volunteers

Throughout the year, we may ask for parent/guardian volunteers on school trips or for various classroom and school activities. The wait time for obtaining a CPIC (background check with vulnerable sector screening) can be lengthy. As such, if you think you would be willing to assist with a trip or school event in the future, please consider obtaining a CPIC with vulnerable sector screening completed, beforehand.
